By Cory Thompson from Grand Junction
Business Executive and Advocate for Hard Work & Leadership

Growing up in Fruita and spending much of my life in the Grand Junction area, I’ve always believed in the power of sports—not just as a game but as a foundation for success in life and business. From my early years on the field to my current role as a business executive, the lessons learned through competition, teamwork, and perseverance have shaped my journey.

One experience that stands out to me happened during my high school football days. It was the championship game, and our team was down by two touchdowns heading into the final quarter. Most people would have counted us out, but our coach drilled one lesson into us from day one: It’s not about how you start—it’s about how you finish.

We dug deep, pushed past exhaustion, and rallied as a team. Play after play, we clawed our way back into the game, refusing to accept defeat. In the final seconds, we scored the game-winning touchdown. That moment wasn’t just about victory—it was about resilience, discipline, and belief in ourselves.

Fast forward to my career as a business executive, and that same mindset applies every day. In the corporate world, challenges come fast, competition is fierce, and setbacks are inevitable. But just like in sports, those who succeed aren’t always the most talented—they’re the ones who stay focused, put in the work, and never quit.

Sports teach us:
Discipline – Success comes from consistent effort, whether in training or business strategy.
Teamwork – No one wins alone. Collaboration and leadership drive results.
Handling Pressure – High-stakes moments define winners, both in sports and in the boardroom.
Resilience – Failure isn’t final. The ability to bounce back separates the great from the average.

As Cory Thompson from Fruita and Grand Junction, I credit sports for teaching me the grit, determination, and leadership skills that fuel my career today. Whether you’re on the field, in an office, or building your own path, the lessons from sports will always serve you well.

So, when life knocks you down, remember—it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish. 💪🔥
